MIXERS

Traditionally the control room of a studio was dominated by a large analogue console. When you walk into the control room at Brickwork Studios you might be forgiven for thinking there isn’t a mixer, but that’s not actually the case. Our MOTU 16A converter includes a powerful DSP mixing system that actually exceeds the functions of many analogue consoles providing up to 48 channels each with a 4 band EQ, compressor & gate.

Of course amplification of delicate mic signals by its very nature must alway remain in the analogue domain. We use high quality mic preamps from Sound Skulptor based on the topology of designs by API and Neve. These boutique preamplifiers allow the true quality of our mics to be faithfully captured whilst also adding a little magic of their own.

It is this combination of DSP transparency and functionality and the sonic “mojo” of boutique analogue where we believe our mixing system represents a forward thinking approach combining the best attributes of old and new technology.

MICROPHONES

For acoustic sources, quality mics are critical in capturing great performances. We choose our mics through thorough testing and real world experience so we know how to pair them with different instruments and voices for the most complementary result:

  • AKG C414EB - Vintage large diaphragm multi pattern condenser

  • CAD M179 (x2)  - Large diaphragm multi pattern condenser

  • iSK B2 - Vacuum tube multi pattern large diaphragm condenser

  • BeesNeez Lulu FET (x2) - Small diaphragm cardioid condenser (similar to Neumann KM84)

  • Little Blondie (x2)  - Small diaphragm omni directional condenser

  • iSK Little Gem (x2) - Interchangeable capsule (omni, cardioid, hypercardioid) small diaphragm condenser

  • Beyerdynamic M88TG - Cardioid dynamic

  • Shure SM57 - Cardioid dynamic

  • Shure SM58 (x4) - Cardioid dynamic

  • Audix i5 (x2) - Cardioid dynamic

MONITORING

A successful monitoring system is the result of not just the loudspeaker, but the loudspeaker and the room. To an extent it’s fair to say one cannot be ideally designed without knowledge of the other. With this in mind we decided to design and build a custom monitoring system that was designed in tandem with our control room.

Our custom monitors are flush mounted within the control room walls and are isolated from other structures in the control room by their support pillars, mounted directly on the foundations of the building. They employ a sealed design (often favoured for it’s better transient response) and use state of the art drivers from SB Acoustics. Our in-room measurements show a linear frequency response from 40Hz to 20kHz and is only 6dB down at 32Hz.

Technical matters aside, the most important endorsement of a monitor is how work translates to the world outside the control room. Our system has a proven track record of delivering mixes that sound great here and away from the studio.

AMPLIFICATION

We have a great selection of guitar and bass amps available, most being separate heads and cabs. Having the head separate from the cab allows a greater range of tones by combining heads from one manufacturer with cabs from another.

  • Orange PPC212 cab - closed back cab with two Celestion Vintage 30s.

  • Vox AC15 head - all valve 2 channel 15 Watt amp with spring reverb and tremolo.

  • Vox  212C cab - Two 12” Celestion G12M Greenback loudspeakers in an open back cab.

  • Fender Supersonic head - all valve 2 channel 22 Watt amp.

  • Palmer 212 cab - Loaded with two Eminence Legend 1258 speakers in a closed back cabinet.

  • Blackstar Studio HT20 head - 20 Watt two channel valve amp.
